The Stele Origin
The visual language of the 88 Field Stele is inspired by ancient Mesopotamian kudurru stones.
Historical object type
A kudurru was a Babylonian boundary stone. It was not only decoration. It recorded a grant, a boundary, a claim, or a protected agreement.
These stones are associated with Ancient Mesopotamia and Babylonia, especially the Kassite and Middle Babylonian periods.
Boundary and witness
Kudurru stones often carried legal text, land grants, sacred witness symbols, celestial iconography, animals, serpents, and divine emblems.
The carved symbols acted like witnesses over the boundary.

This image started as a simple wagon: a burden-carrier, a container, a little human vehicle for what has to be carried.
Across old sky traditions, there is the idea of the Wagon of Heaven — the celestial wagon, the northern carrier, the vehicle of orientation. In the surrounding northern sky-field, the dragon-serpent image also appears: Draco, the coil around the pole.
So the image became more than a wagon. It became a map.
